
Humane Education Volunteers

Humane Education Volunteers conduct on foot RSPCA lesson plans to schools and local community groups. RSPCA lessons are aimed to develop empathy, kindness, respect, responsibility and courage towards animals and people. These lessons are delivered to a large range of age groups from Kindergarten to Adults. The volunteer will deliver these lessons to a range of age groups which is dependant upon their skills, capability and confidence.
Position Requirements:

Availability between Monday to Friday, with at least one day within these.

Conduct visit with one to two RSPCA lessons. The maximum timeframe for a visit is 80 minutes.

Deliver AVA PetPEP lessons, which involves 20 minute rotations of classes with a maximum of four classes involved.

Communication via phone or email with RSPCA Education Staff and/or Education Liaison Officer or Coordinator on visits. Particular importance is the organizational skills in managing your total visits for each month and reporting this information to the Education Liaison Officer or Coordinator.

Knowledge or ability to gain knowledge of RSPCA Humane Education Volunteer Policies & Procedures, campaigns and lesson plans offered.

Excellent communication via phone and email, with Education Liaison Officer or Coordinator and AVA PetPEP in order to schedule visits, determine needs and update on educational events in your region.

Willingness to attend a training day for RSPCA Humane Education Volunteers as scheduled for the region. After completion of training, willingness to revise knowledge and complete a refresher training as scheduled for the region, each year.

It is essential that all volunteers within the Humane Education Department hold a current, valid blue card before conducting lessons. Volunteers who do not hold a valid blue card must be willing to obtain one. All volunteers must notify the RSPCA Humane Education Department when their blue card has expired, renewed or is cancelled.

It is essential that all volunteers have a passion for animals which most importantly includes the welfare of animals!
Skills required – Ability to deliver a range of RSPCA lesson plans, particularly at a primary year level with developing skills to future possibilities of delivering to secondary schools, adult classes and larger groups. • Ability to work well with a range of people from the school and local communities. These include the local council, local veterinarians, teachers, principals and RSPCA staff. • Excellent communication and organizational skills. • Understanding of education. Having teaching experience is desirable. • Flexibility to conduct an RSPCA visit dependant upon the demand. This may vary from week to week. • Ability to learn and acquire skills to deliver RSPCA lessons from a written source, with a maximum timeframe for one visit being 80 minutes. • Willing to gain a strong understanding of the Policies & Procedures for Humane Education Volunteers. • Knowledge and understanding of the RSPCA Humane Education role and what we offer to the community. • Minimal computer skills, with at least knowledge of Microsoft Excel and email communications.
